I have made many attempts at shots similar to this one and it almost always goes the same way. I notice the surf running over some rocks. Because of the shape of the rocks and the back light from the setting sun, it looks nice. I compose the scene based on my memory of where the surf was, a less than reliable method. Then I wait. The surf doesn't come back over the rocks. The sun gets closer to the horizon. I doubt that it's going to work out. Then, once in a while, it actually does work out.
